"Uh, Senator, how long do we?" Vilsack, he asked, shaking his head.

At a hearing of the Senate Committee on Agriculture on the Farm Bill on Wednesday, reiterated Senator Pat Roberts (R-KS) is a common frustration in agriculture today: The media bashing of agricultural production. Then he asked Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack, for his thoughts on what can be done to counter bad press.

Former Iowa governor described his reaction after watching a morning show on television recently when a guest author of a book, that the invention of agriculture was the big mistake was argued the human race.

"It irritates me to the point where we ask for the same time," said Vilsack. So far there has been no response program if you will be asked, was revealed Vilsack Morning Joe MSNBC.

Vilsack said he thinks part of the problem is with biased reporting of agriculture that most newspaper reporters to understand the agricultural production at a time when many staff cuts.

"I think it is important to understand for Americans, that it something that nobody else in the world," he said to have. This is a secure, reliable, cost of consumer food only cents on every dollar of disposable income ten. In the rest of the developed world, consumers pay about 25% of their income on food and in developing countries with 50% to 60%, he said.

Agriculture should be able to ask, "What are you doing with that other 10% to 15% do and when was the last time you thanked him for a farmer," he said.

"You need a police officer, he said," but every day, two or three times a day, you need a farmer. "

An old minister once summed up the fine qualities of one of his relatives by observing, %u201CShe was the one who walked in when everyone else walked out.%u201D He was referring to the woman%u2019s willingness to help people, in part, by being present when others were seeking distance.

%u201CBeing present%u201D is no small thing. Whether it's the person who visits the coworker in the hospital or the manager who walks to the employee%u2019s office, there can be a powerful signal in the willingness to be there. That%u2019s one reason why Management By Wandering Around can have such impact. People want leaders who know what their work area is like and who are not above dropping by to chat. I%u2019ve seen places where the CEO seldom varies from a set path to and from the office. Rest assured, that practice did not go unnoticed by the people on nearby floors who never were graced by the CEO%u2019s presence.

There are, of course, times when leaders should stay away. Their presence may spoil a good time or be seen as an implicit endorsement of questionable behavior. A supervisor who goes to happy hour with the team may be wise to have a drink and then leave before someone puts down a few Zombies and decides to unload a gunny sack of grievances.

This all falls under the question of when to engage and when to back off. When is presence needed and desired? When might it spark resentment or interfere with work? A leader who is too detached might not be able to give a clear answer. In general, erring on the side of being there is best. Cautious detachment and distance can be easily seen as indifference.

In too many cases, that perception is correct.
